Hunting Safety & Regulations

Information for the Public

February 27, 2018

The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is reaching out to the community to help raise awareness on hunter’s safety and the Provincial Wildlife Regulations.

Violations and complaints of hunting taking place within residential areas of Municipal boundaries have been occurring to the attention of the Town Enforcement Department.

The Town is concerned with firearms being discharged within the Town boundaries and the possibility of causing injuries to persons and damage to properties. We are advising residents to take extreme caution while handling firearms while hunting.

The Town’s priority is the safety of its residents. We are encouraging members of the public to help increase hunting safety by reporting any violations to the:

Fish and Wildlife Enforcement at 896-7958; or

the Town’s Community Constable, Gary O’Brien, at 896-7121

The following are some of the Provincial Wildlife Regulations which individuals are required to abide by while hunting:

  1. A person shall not discharge a firearm within 1,000 metres of a school, playground or athletic field or within 300 metres of a dwelling
  2. Every person who, while hunting, discharges or causes to be discharged or handles a firearm without exercising reasonable care for the safety of other persons, is guilty of an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine of not more than $500 or to imprisonment of a term of not more than 6 months, or both.

The Department of Fisheries and Land Resources have been notified of the problem and we are asking all hunters to abide by the Wildlife Regulations and hunt safely.
