Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay Bans Single-Use Plastic Shopping Bags

In light of the recent comprehensive consultations conducted by both the Provincial Government and Municipalities NL; and in addition to the research study conducted by the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, and given the overwhelming support in favour of a By-Law to Ban Single-Use Plastic Bags in the Municipality of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, over the past few months the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay has been working diligently to draft a proposed Regulation for the consideration of the 12th Council of Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

In a regular meeting of Council on Tuesday, November 26th, 2019, the 12th Council of Happy Valley-Goose Bay voted unanimously in favour to pass a By-Law banning the use of Single-Use Plastic Shopping Bags in the municipality of Happy Valley-Goose Bay with an implementation date of January 01, 2020.

“What we have seen here this evening is the culmination of a lot of hard work and serious discussion. The residents and businesses of the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay have guided this and previous Councils and they have told us that Council needs to take action. After extensive public consultation, our council is pleased to see the Single-Use Plastic Bag Ban now in place effective January 01, 2020.”

-His Worship, Wilson (Wally) Andersen, Mayor, Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay

“As a Council working on your behalf, we strive to act in an environmentally sound and responsible manner. Given these facts, the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay feels it prudent to follow the example of communities such as those in Nunatsiavut as well as Cartwright. I encourage other municipalities to follow suit.”

-Councillor Lori Dyson-Edmunds, Chair of Economic Development & Public Engagement
