(St. John’s NL) – His Worship, Mayor Wally Andersen along with members of the Town Council of Happy Valley-Goose Bay as well Nunatsiavut Government Deputy Minister of Health & Social Development, Michelle Kinney presented Survey Results on Labrador Health Services to Hon. John Haggie, Minister of Health & Community Services during a meeting held at Confederation Building Tuesday, December 4, 2018.
Survey Results stem from a Labrador Health Forum which was held at the Annual General Meeting of the Combined Councils of Labrador in February 2018. A session held on February 9th, 2018 combined with an online identified five themes:
- Long-Term Care
- Special Services and Travel Assistance
- Mental Health & Addictions
- Emergency Services
- Governance Structure
Happy Valley-Goose Bay Mayor, Wally Andersen, says: “While we applaud Government on positive movement in the area of Mental Health & Addictions, there is still much to do to improve health services available to the Labrador portion of the province.” The Mayor further adds “We want to work with Government to see improvements and this Summary of Results will go along way in achieving positive improvements.”
“Of grave concern is in the theme of Special Services and Travel Assistance, far to often patients are having to stay at the Labrador Health Centre for weeks at a time in order to keep an appointment to see a cardiologist in St. John’s, that adds a very heavy toll to an already stressful situation” says Happy Valley-Goose Bay Town Councillor Lori Dyson Edmunds.
