Search and Rescue Training in the PTA
May 10, 2022 – Happy Valley-Goose Bay – Canadian Armed Forces

5 Wing Goose Bay would like to advise the public that 413 Transport and Rescue Squadron will be conducting Search and Rescue (SAR) training in the vicinity of the 5 Wing Practice Target Area from May 11 to 12, 2022 between the hours of 9:30 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. Air crew will be conducting search patterns at lower altitudes in some areas. When required SAR Technicians or equipment will be parachuted from the aircraft.

During this training the public may see:

  • One C-130H Hercules plane and one CH146 Griffon helicopter
  • Wind markers being released from the rear of aircraft (markers are bio degradable)
  • SAR Technicians jumping from C-130H Hercules
  • Over the Practice Target Area (160 KM south west of Goose Bay) Illumination Flares may be used for night operations.

Search and Rescue operations often take place in remote and hard to access locations. To achieve the most realistic training, the harsh environment of Labrador was chosen to challenge the aircraft crews and SAR Technicians. Safety of the exercise participants and the civilian population is of the highest priority. Steps have been taken to avoid disturbing human and wildlife populations.
