Mayor Wally Andersen

His Worship Mayor Wilson “Wally” Andersen was born in Makkovik and received his education in North West River. His political career began in 1996 when he was elected as Member of the House of Assembly in the district of Torngat Mountains. He was re-elected as MHA in 1999 and again in 2003 where he remained a Member until 2007.

Throughout his career, Wally served as Parliamentary Secretary of Aboriginal Affairs to the Premier and as Minister of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs. He has also served the Newfoundland and Labrador Government as Government Critic for Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs as well as the Department of Culture and Youth from 2003 to 2007.

While working for the Government of Newfoundland & Labrador, Wally played a major role in the finalization of a Land Claims Agreement for the Inuit people of Labrador.
Wally had been self-employed since 2010 when he was elected, in June 2016, to the 11th Council of the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay during a by-election. During his term, he sat as chair of the Research and Public Engagement Committee. He was re-elected to the 12th Council in September 2017 and appointed Deputy Mayor within Council. In January 2018 he assumed the role of Mayor.
