Town Calls For Action on COVID-19 Precaution

The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is calling on the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to immediately halt all nonessential travel to and from the island to minimize potential exposure and spread of COVID-19.
“The community is very concerned with the amount of traffic coming to our community from the island of Newfoundland. Information reported by the Chief Medical Officer of Health points to a majority of COVID-19 cases are in the Island portion of the province,” says Mayor Andersen, further stating: “Myself and the 12th Council of Happy Valley-Goose Bay are especially concerned with transient workers. Reports indicate an influx of up to 100 expected in the next day or so destined for Projects in Labrador. We call on the Premier to do the right thing. Close the Labrador border to everything and everyone not absolutely essential.”
There may be steps in place to minimize risk; however, during a Public Health State of Emergency residents of Happy Valley-Goose Bay are not comfortable with the practice of flying in workers to Projects via Happy Valley-Goose Bay. “I want to assure residents that the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay will continue to advocate on their behalf and that the health and safety of all is the first and foremost priority,” stated the Mayor.
The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay strongly recommends that residents and businesses continue to utilize a cautious approach and exercise recommended practices to help prevent the potential spread of COVID-19.
