National Day of Mourning

April 28th marks the National Day of mourning. Throughout the province of Newfoundland and Labrador and indeed the country, communities are marking this somber day. The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay joins the province and the Country in Honouring Those Killed or Injured in Workplace Incidents.
The flags at Town Hall remain at half-mast today in recognition of the National Day of Mourning. This day is set aside to remember and honour those who lost their lives or were injured due to a workplace tragedy. It is a reminder of the importance of the commitment to improve health and safety in all workplaces each and every day.
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay reminds all residents to continue to practice proper social/physical distancing and hygiene measures as outlined by the Provincial Chief Medical Officer of Health to further protect ourselves and the many workers providing essential goods and services.
We see these essential workers at our grocery stores, pharmacies, banks, and certainly our Labrador Health Centre just to name a few. The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay also has frontline, essential workers out there each day as well during this Pandemic; the employees of the Town’s essential services. Services such as Fire & Emergency Services, Municipal Enforcement, Water & Sewer, Roads & Grounds, Finance, Management, and residential roadside garbage collection (Hickey’s Waste Management).
Please if you see any of these dedicated men and women out and about in the community honk your horn or wave at them, let them know they are appreciated.
The 12th Council of the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay encourages residents of the community to show solidarity with frontline essential workers and remember fallen workers by lighting a candle and posting a photo to social media with the hashtag #WorkersDayofMourning and #StopthePandemicAtWork.
Everyone is encouraged to continue to do their part in protecting frontline workers who continue to provide services and supports to all towns and communities.
