13th Council Continuing to Address Transiently Homelessness Issues

Since the update provided on May 27, 2022, the 13th Council has continued to fully engage in the transient and homelessness concerns within our community. As residents are aware, Happy Valley-Goose Bay has witnessed a sharp increase in issues on this matter.

As mentioned previously, on Thursday, May 26, 2022, His Worship Mayor George Andrews and the Town’s Chief Administrative Officer, Nadine MacAulay, met with Premier Andrew Furey.

Last week, Mayor Andrews, Deputy Mayor Ella Wallace, Councillor Denise Rumbolt and the Town’s Chief Administrative Officer, Nadine MacAulay, met with Premier Furey (second in-person meeting in as many weeks) as well as several meetings with various provincial Cabinet Ministers.

The 13th Council of the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay highly appreciates the Premier’s willingness to meet and work with our community. The 13th Council is also happy to be working diligently with the province and other community partners through the Action Team.

As a municipality, we do not have the capacity or resources, financial or otherwise, to tackle homelessness, addictions, and intergenerational trauma effectively. However, the 13th Council will remain fully engaged and is working tirelessly to address concerns and work with other community partners in this matter. Dialogue and advocacy are critical tools that the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay will continue to use.

As per the Town’s social media policy (A0028), the 13th Council will not be addressing this very important matter via social media. Social Media cannot and will not find the necessary solutions.

We understand the frustration and concern of the community, however, we ask for patience as the situation is ongoing and developments are happening daily, therefore the 13th Council of the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay will be providing a further community update at the end of this week to share these important details.
