On Sunday, October 23, 2016, the Mayors of Happy Valley-Goose Bay (Jamie Snook), North West River (Ernie McLean), Rigolet (Jack Shiwak), and Cartwright (Dwight Lethbridge) held an emergency meeting concerning the Muskrat Falls protest, and a meeting tomorrow with the Premier and Labrador’s Indigenous leaders.
Despite having additional support from the Combined Councils of Labrador, and Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, attendance at the meeting has been denied. Confirmation was received this evening via email from Minister Trimper with a copy to all Labrador MHAs, the President of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, and various Government officials.
“Due to the gravity of the situation, this response is extremely disappointing from a Municipal Government perspective and we feel more strongly than ever that this is not how you do development in collaboration with local communities and residents that are so deeply impacted,” states Mayor Jamie Snook.
