Happy Valley – Goose Bay, NL – The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay welcomes the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s funding announcement of $11 million to the Labrador Wellness Centre Project.

This contribution represents the most significant recreational investment the Province has ever made to the municipality’s infrastructure.

“This is a long term investment for the community and we are pleased that the Province has made this significant contribution to address the aging recreational infrastructure needs in our community,” said Mayor Jamie Snook. “This commitment positions the town to collaborate with other governments and organizations to leverage funds which will see the project to completion.”

“Today’s significant investment for the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay will be beneficial to all residents in this region,” said the Honourable Keith Russell, Minister of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs. “This is a very proud day for me and demonstrates the commitment of our government to improving the lives of people across the Big Land. I am looking forward to being there when the doors to the new Wellness Centre opens.”

Funding from the Province will be utilized for the design and construction of the first phase of the centre, which has a projected cost of $25 million. This phase includes: aquatics facilities, multi-purpose gymnasium, walking/running track, fitness centre, community rooms and a childcare centre with space for 60 children. Once established, the wellness centre will service the needs of all communities throughout the Upper Lake Melville Region.

“The Province’s contribution to the Labrador Wellness Centre Project signifies a long-term investment in our town and the Upper Lake Melville region,” said Councillor Jackie Compton Hobbs, Chair of the Community Services and Recreation Committee. “We are delighted in the support for this project from the community as well as the Provincial and Federal Governments.”

The town is working in conjunction with the YMCA of Newfoundland and Labrador on this project and has established a Campaign Cabinet Committee to assist in capital fundraising.
