Happy Valley – Goose Bay, NL – In recognition of its new Geographic Information Systems (GIS) capabilities, the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is celebrating World GIS Day on Wednesday, November 16th.

Throughout the week, the Town is inviting community members to visit the Town Hall, during regular business hours, for a demonstration of the Town’s expanding municipal geographical information systems. Residents will also be offered a printed map of their house, on the spot of their request, from the Town’s 2015 satellite imagery.

The Town will also be sharing some exciting new GIS features with the community in recognition of GIS Day on November 16th.

“Our Council is committed to acquiring new areas of expertise to strengthen the technology and services provided at the Town,” said Mayor Jamie Snook. “Our GIS technologist, Anatolijs Venovcevs, has established new capabilities that are enabling the municipality to discover new-found efficiencies in operations and provide better services to the community.”

In April 2016, the Town hired its own GIS technologist to bring the Town to modern levels of information management. Since then, its municipal GIS technologist has:

o digitized all 3,510 civic addresses in the urbanized area of town;
o corrected centerline data for 373,830 metres of road;
o imported and processed over 20 GB of geospatial data for municipal use;
o run countless queries examining properties/roads/areas;
o worked with all municipal departments; and
o created over 150 maps for the Town

The continued expansion of the municipality’s GIS capabilities will be utilized to assist in all functions of Town operations, including: planning and development, recreation and community services, emergency preparedness and response, road transport and water and sewer maintenance.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a modern method and science of collecting, storing, managing, analyzing and presenting geographical information. Nationally, GIS adds over $21 billion annually to the economy.
