Town Expresses condolences on passing of Bill Rompkey

The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is expressing condolences to the family and friends of the late, Mr. Bill Rompkey.
Mr. Rompkey first came to Labrador when he accepted a position as Principal of Yale Amalgamated School in North West River, Labrador. He made an instant connection with Labrador and its people and later became the first Superintendent of Education with the Labrador East Integrated School Board.
In 1972 Mr. Rompkey won the nomination to the Liberal Party and his career as a politician began. As Member of Parliament for Grand Falls-White Bay-Labrador, Mr. Rompkey was an advocate for better services and recognition for his constituents in Labrador. In 1995, Mr. Rompkey was appointed to the Canadian Senate where he served as Deputy Leader of the Senate until his mandatory retirement in 2011.
“Mr. Rompkey’s contributions to Labrador politics and society will be remembered very fondly and in the highest regard,” said Mayor Jamie Snook. “My deepest respect.”
