Community Services & Recreation

Recreation is an essential part of every person’s holistic well-being, and it plays a vital role in the quality of life in a community. The Town believes in the philosophy of offering quality recreational facilities to the community at an affordable and reasonable cost.

Along with operating and maintaining the many facilities you will see listed, the Community Services & Recreation Department is also responsible for the groundskeeping of approximately 1,860,647.19 square meters of green space, parks and playground area.

Our goal is to keep abreast with the changing needs of our residents and continually update activities to keep pace with community growth.

The interactive Recreation In Happy Valley-Goose Bay Map will allow residents to provide feedback if there is an issue with any of the facilities maintained by the Department of Community Services and Recreation. This feedback will go directly to the Director of Community Services and Recreation so the Department can deal with issues accordingly.

The Community Services and Recreation Department operates the following annual programs and events for the community:

  • Polar Dip Fundraiser for the Labrador Wellness Centre: November

The Department also supports and hosts community events such as:

  • Conferences and trade shows (i.e. Expo Labrador)
  • Bike Rodeo
  • Concerts
  • Labrador Winter Games
  • Sporting Tournaments

 

Wellness is important to our residents and we are making strategic investments into our community’s recreational infrastructure:

  • Kinsmen Park- revitalizing with trails and a splash pad
  • Skateboard Park expansion

  • Mealy Mountain Collegiate Sports Complex- upgraded fencing and lighting for increased safety and security
  • Playground equipment

Goose Bay Curling Club

There are men’s, women’s and mixed league curling teams and regular bonspiel and funspiel events organized. Ice rentals are also available. The municipality owns this facility, but it is operated by the Goose Bay Curling Club.

Central Labrador YMCA

This facility has an accessible 25 m, 6 lane main pool, play pool, 3 change rooms, conditioning centre with cardio, strength and free weight equipment. It also has an indoor walking track, child minding room, a multi-purpose gymnasium and a licensed child care centre. Plus so much more!

Amaruk Golf Club

This nine-hole course, which is laid out through rugged terrain, provides an excellent challenge for golfers of all ages and experience levels.

 

Healthy Waters Labrador

The Town is working with Healthy Waters Labrador on their Birch Island Restoration and Trail project which will turn the area into a heritage site for everyone to enjoy. Birch Island was a former settlement located next to the community.

This three-year project will include an outdoor classroom teaching children about wetlands and the environment and an eight-kilometer wheelchair boardwalk trail system.
