Town Committed to Respectful Workplace and Dialogue

The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay strongly believes in providing a safe and respectful workplace for all of its employees.
In recent weeks and months, residents have provided derogatory commentary about Town Employees and have, in some cases, called in to question suitability to carry out their duties based on an individual’s origin.
The public is reminded that the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is an equal opportunity employer.
Furthermore, it is the policy of the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay to staff all positions with the best-qualified personnel and to utilize all personnel according to their training and skillset, in a continuing effort to fulfill the needs of the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay and its residents.
The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay currently employs more than 60 people and provides a positive, team-oriented work environment that allows individuals to meet their full potential.
Hiring and assignment of all positions will be made without regard to race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, political belief, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, or age (unless based on a bona fide occupational requirement).
While everyone is entitled to express their views on matters of public concern, that right is not absolute. Residents are also reminded that posting any comment on social media that is deemed defamatory and or threatening will be taken seriously and provided to the appropriate authorities. The Town and/or its employees are entitled to take whatever action it deems legally necessary, the costs for which may be borne by those who continue commentary that constitutes intimidation and/or defamation.
All Town employees are an asset to the unique and diverse community we all live in. Daily, your Town employees work very hard to provide services to our residents and businesses. It is the intent of the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay to foster democratic debate but to also provide a safe and respectful workplace for all of the Town employees. We will make every effort to protect our employees, and this extends to the online bullying and intimidation that seems to be a common practice on Social Media for far too long. Some examples of intimidation activities on Social Media include but are not limited to:
- Verbal abuse, yelling, or threats;
- Degrading or offensive remarks;
- Spreading defamatory/malicious gossip or rumours;
- Inappropriate communication through email, social media, or texts;
- Actual or threatened physical contact of an unwelcomed nature; or damage to personal property
- Bullying or intimidation.
