Town calls for independent public inquiry into cause of flooding on the Churchill River
Happy Valley – Goose Bay, NL – The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is calling on the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to launch a full independent public inquiry into the cause of the recent flooding of the Churchill River, and to determine ways to prevent similar events from happening in the future.
The call was made during a motion presented during this month’s regular public Council meeting Tuesday. The motion passed unanimously.
“There are a lot of unanswered questions as to what contributed to this disaster,” says Mayor Jamie Snook. “Many of those impacted by the flood believe there may be a connection with the possible release of water by Nalcor Energy from the Muskrat Falls reservoir, and they deserve to find out if this is indeed the case.”
Premier Dwight Ball has indicated publicly that an investigation, independent of Nalcor, will be conducted, but did not commit to a full public inquiry.
