The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay Fire Department reminds residents of the importance of safe practices during prolonged power outages. In particular, as they relate to the safe usage of Candles and Generators.

The National Fire Protection Association offers sound advice related to the safe use of Candles and Gas Powered Generators.

It is not recommended to use Candles during a power outage; flashlights are a safer option. Always have flashlights and spare batteries on hand.

Gas-powered generators are great for providing some power during an outage; however, they can pose serious health and safety issues when utilized incorrectly. Generators should be used in well-ventilated locations outside and away from doors, windows, and vent openings.

If using Generators or other gas-powered appliances (such as propane fireplace) in or around your home, make sure you have CSA-approved carbon monoxide (CO) alarms in your home; they can save your life. (Never operate a generator inside your home or attached garage).
