The Bigland Offroad and Snowmobile Safety (BOSS) Committee is promoting this awareness week across our region. Many of the region’s snow-covered trails are maintained and groomed by snowmobile club volunteers and enjoyed by a variety of winter recreationists including cross-country skiers, dog sledders, winter hikers, and snowmobile enthusiasts.

Activities and events held during Snowmobile Safety Awareness Week, and throughout the winter season, will promote responsible attitudes and actions that will foster the safe, family image of snowmobiling.

“Safe Snowmobiling means riding within your own capabilities, operating at safe and appropriate speeds for the terrain and never drinking alcoholic beverages before or while driving,” says Janice White, Chair of the BOSS committee. “Always wear a helmet and adequate clothing, stay within designated riding areas, and always snowmobile with another person, never alone. Most importantly, always use common sense and keep a clear head. Learn all you can about responsible snowmobiling and keep safety as your top priority.”

The BOSS committee is made up of many community partners including the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Town of Makkovik, Town of Nain, Nunatsiavut Government’s Department of Health and Social Development, Government of NL’s Department of Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods and Department of Justice (Fish and Wildlife Division), Grand River Snowmobile Club, Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and Labrador-Grenfell Health.
