Town Clarifies Arena Closing February 25, 2022
Release Date: February 26, 2022

The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay would like to clarify the reasoning for the sudden closure of the EJ Broomfield Memorial Arena on the afternoon of Friday, February 25, 2022.

In a Town Public Service Announcement on the above-mentioned date, the Town inadvertently gave the impression that the closure was caused by “malfunctioning transformers”. This may have led the public to believe that this was caused by NL Hydro. The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay advises the public that this was certainly not the case.

In fact, the Town wishes to commend and thank NL Hydro for their quick response and for replacing the three transformers and bringing the Arena back online in such a short timeframe. This truly speaks volumes to their level of expertise and professionalism.

The issue surrounding the three transformers was caused by the Town under circumstances completely outside of NL Hydro’s control. While the situation that caused the three transformers to have to be replaced was serious, the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is first and foremost thankful that no one was injured. The Town is also impressed again by NL Hydro’s quick response and getting the necessary work completed that allowed the arena to re-open the same day when the Town fully expected the facility to be closed for the remainder of the day.

The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay sincerely apologizes for any confusion it may have caused, particularly if a negative lens was placed over NL Hydro’s response. The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is fortunate to have such a dedicated NL Hydro Team as part of our community.
