Town GIS Maps, Muskrat Falls Dam Breach Scenarios

The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay completed an internal Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analysis of the impacts a potential Muskrat Falls dam breach would have on our community.

The following maps indicate 2 possible scenarios:

1. Five maps showing the potential flooding impact from the Winter Headpond phase (25% flooding). This is the potential scenario of a dam breach from the first phase of flooding which Nalcor has indicated could take place anytime as of this past Saturday, October 15th. VIEW THE WINTER HEADPOND FAILURE MAPS

2. Five maps showing the potential flooding impact from a FULL Muskrat Falls Dam Failure. This is the potential scenario for when the project is fully completed and shows the maximum damage. These maps show the maximum flood levels based on two scenarios – i) Fair Weather and ii) Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). Fair Weather scenario is flooding from a breach under normal circumstances. PMF scenario is flooding from a breach under the largest conceivable flood estimated from maximum precipitation and/or snow melt. VIEW THE MUSKRAT FALLS DAM FAILURE MAPS

*Note: For the lower Valley, the maps illustrate the main flood zone to be the area south of Grenfell Street*

The Town’s GIS analysis was derived from the figures presented in Nalcor Energy’s Muskrat Falls Dam Break Study (http://bit.ly/2ehTqlQ).

Our maps are also available in hard copy, upon request, at the Town Hall.
