Located in Central Labrador, the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is a gateway to the North.

The town offers the most extensive range of commercial services in Labrador, including government support agencies, training and professional support services. As the only location where road, sea and air services all come together with quality infrastructure; Happy Valley-Goose Bay is the transportation hub of Labrador.

The town has an international airport, marine facility that provides services to the North coast of Labrador; and highways being constructed to Labrador City and the South coast of Labrador.

History

The community was built in 1941 and was known as the former Town of Happy Valley and Local Improvement District of Goose Bay. It wasn’t until 1973, that it was incorporated as the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

The military has played an inherent role in forming the history of this region. The airfield was first constructed in 1941 as a landing and refuelling stop for the Atlantic Ferry Command; was used as an aircraft base during World War II; and then became a tactical flight training centre for many allied Air Forces such as German, British and Dutch.

Located on Canadian Forces Base 5 Wing Goose Bay, the airport is on the official NASA list of alternate Shuttle landing sites due to the quality of infrastructure and prevailing weather conditions. In 2016, the Town joined CFB 5 Wing Goose Bay in celebrating its 75th Anniversary as a part of our community.
