On June 22, 2004, the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay signed a Municipal Stewardship Agreement with the Provincial Government to conserve, protect and enhance wetland and associated upland habitat within the municipality.
The Town became a member of the Stewardship Association of Municipalities (SAM), a network of communities who practice environmental stewardship across Newfoundland and Labrador. SAM contributes to maintaining and enhancing biodiversity in the province. It exists to work in collaboration with the partners of the Eastern Habitat Joint Venture in NL (NL EHJV) to secure, enhance and restore important wildlife habitat, namely wetlands, uplands, coastal areas and species at risk which are generally found within municipal planning boundaries.
The Town, in collaboration with SAM and other partners, seeks to promote stewardship and conservation of important wetlands located within the Town’s municipal boundaries.
In September 2016, the Town signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Healthy Waters Labrador on the Birch Island Restoration and Trail Project to establish the conservation and enhancement of wetland habitat in the community and the creation of a natural space that will showcase our community for years to come.
